Four Decades of Global Movement In a Tune

Have you ever wondered how four decades of global movement sounds? Applying refugee data from the United Nations from 1975 to 2012, Brian Foo, going by the name of “Data Driven DJ”, shows the development of people on the move, using sound.

His piece was inspired by The Refugee Project, an interactive web project and map showing refugee migrations since 1975. As the map only shows the movement up until year 2012, the ending will likely sound different today. However, it still provides  insight to the proportion and complexity of contemporary global movement.

“The quantity, length, and pitch of the song’s instruments are controlled by the volume of refugee movement and distance traveled between their countries of origin and asylum.”, Foo says on his website, that his aim is for the listener to intuitively experience both the volume of people on the move, and the distance they travel from their home countries.
