A young sailor with the Norwegian rescue vessel Siem Pilot was found after going missing for more than 48 hours.
The EU Border agency, Frontex, had announced that Benjamin Olafsson, 23, had disappeared in Catania, Sicily, where Siem Pilot was docked, on 15 September.
He was found two days later and was reunited with family members who flew to Sicily. He was expected to travel with them back to Norway in the coming days.
“I am glad Benjamin is safe and sound. Benjamin and the rest of the Siem Pilot crew have done an outstanding job helping to save thousands of people as part of Operation Triton,” said Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri.
The Siem Pilot helped rescue 6 500 migrants in the Mediterranean since it was deployed by Frontex in June. The vessel’s was offered to the Norwegian government by the Norwegian Society for Search and Rescue.
