Since August 25, more than half a million Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh to escape killings and other mass atrocities being conducted in Rakhine State, Myanmar. Xchange has a dedicated field team currently in Bangladesh collecting data in new Rohingya settlements, to document crimes committed against the Rohingya since August 25 and to further understand the dynamics of the Rohingya exodus to Bangladesh.
Interviews conducted by Xchange with survivors have shed light on the scale of the atrocities committed in Myanmar and the devastating effects on the civilian population leading to the exodus. They told sordid tales of gang-rape, torture, and extrajudicial executions – including of babies and young children – brutal beatings, disappearances and other serious human rights violations.
The Xchange field team have been collecting data on the Rohingya situation throughout Cox’s Bazar, a district not only known only for its beautiful unbroken stretch of sandy beach, but also for being home to a large number of old and new refugee camps which house the long persecuted Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. The team have been collecting data around camps in Nayapara and Leda, and recently established Zadi Muraha, all bordering the Naf River. Further north, the team have been collecting data in camps close to Shamlapur, Falonkali, Kutupalong and Balukhali.
